Sui sets a new standard for blockchain transaction speed
A new consensus protocol called Mysticeti developed on Sui reduces consensus latency to 390 milliseconds and is expected to launch on the mainnet this summer.
Sui, an innovative Layer 1 blockchain delivering industry-leading performance and infinite horizontal scalability, today announced on its official X account the successful deployment of its new consensus protocol, Mysticeti, to its testnet. This major breakthrough reduces Sui’s testnet consensus time by 80%, down to just 390 milliseconds, while maintaining the protocol’s industry-leading throughput. This impressive demonstration proves Sui is the fastest consensus layer in the industry.
Developed based on in-depth research into Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus mechanisms, Mysticeti represents a significant advancement over the Narwhal-Bullshark consensus algorithm that launched with Sui’s mainnet just a year ago. It achieves unprecedented transaction speeds and lowers CPU requirements for validator nodes. This improvement extends Sui’s exceptional low-latency performance to all types of transactions across the network.
Sui’s unique object-centric architecture enables the network to process transactions differently based on their characteristics and associated objects. On Sui, transactions involving only “owned objects” (such as peer-to-peer transfers) do not require consensus—they follow a fast path and can be finalized more quickly. In contrast, transactions involving shared objects (for example, those related to markets, auctions, or collaborative gaming assets) do require consensus. Previously, this implied higher processing latency. Now, Mysticeti changes that by using an optimized BFT consensus mechanism to handle shared-object transactions. Designed to minimize communication among validators and fully leverage network bandwidth, Mysticeti maintains high throughput.
“Mysticeti is not just a major leap for Sui—it’s a significant advancement for blockchain technology as a whole,” said George Danezis, founder of Sui Network, pioneer in global BFT consensus research, and co-founder and chief scientist at Mysten Labs. “It reduces consensus latency to what we believe is the theoretical minimum, while preserving the advantages of high capacity and low computational cost. It also allows for transaction processing faster than consensus within the same protocol—a feature unique to Sui. Mysticeti exemplifies how Sui continues to push the boundaries of blockchain technology.”
The results of Mysticeti on testnet are highly significant, reducing transaction submission latency by 80% compared to Narwhal. The enhancements in Mysticeti dramatically reduce complexity and optimize resource usage, enabling the Sui network to process tens of thousands of transactions per second with sub-second latency.
These advancements are crucial for Sui as it continues to solidify its position at the forefront of blockchain speed and scale, offering a seamless experience for developers and users at mass scale.
“The rollout of Mysticeti is the result of successful collaboration between research, engineering, and our validator node community,” said Dmitri Perelman, Engineering Lead at Mysten Labs. “The lessons we learned from building and fine-tuning the previous generation of consensus in production provided context and inspiration for researchers to propose a new protocol. After the first Mysticeti prototype demonstrated undeniable performance advantages, the engineering team went all-in, and the rollout of this next-generation consensus to mainnet will happen in the coming months with support from our validators.”
Kevin Nelson, co-founder of Aftermath Finance, said: “Mysten has proven that DAG-based architectures can surpass state-of-the-art performance in both consensus throughput and latency. We’re excited about the testnet launch of Mysticeti and even more eager to see it reach users upon mainnet release. Additionally, we look forward to leveraging Mysticeti’s new design to deliver a better end-to-end experience on Aftermath.”
Greg Siourounis, Head of the Sui Foundation, added: “Low latency and fast transaction speeds have always been core values that make Sui a preferred platform for developers—and now, Mysticeti makes the developer experience even better. This breakthrough once again demonstrates our continuous and relentless focus on innovation, opening up new possibilities in the type and quality of decentralized applications that can be built on Sui.”
The key innovations behind Mysticeti are detailed in the newly released paper titled “Mysticeti: Low-Latency DAG Consensus with Fast Commit Paths”, which demonstrates the scalability of this new technology and is available for review.
