BNB Chain Beacon Chain Migration Guide
BNB Chain Fusion is a strategic shift that migrates the functionalities of the BNB Beacon Chain to the BNB Smart Chain (BSC), replacing the BNB Beacon Chain.
The BNB Beacon Chain was initially designed as a staking and governance layer, complementing the BNB Smart Chain (BSC) by enhancing security and supporting decentralized exchanges (DEXs). However, with the evolution of BSC and changes in the blockchain landscape—including the decommissioning of order-book-based DEXs under BEP151—the BNB Beacon Chain has become increasingly redundant. Its connection to BSC via cross-chain bridges introduces development complexity and security vulnerabilities.
Therefore, BNB Chain Fusion represents a strategic shift to migrate the functions of the BNB Beacon Chain onto the BNB Smart Chain (BSC), ultimately replacing the Beacon Chain. This move aims to streamline the network, improve efficiency, reduce security risks, and align the BNB Chain architecture with current technological demands and future growth.
Why should validators be excited about migrating to BSC?
The transition from the BNB Beacon Chain to BSC brings several benefits that validators should look forward to:
Simplified BNB Chain Development Process
Migration to BSC will simplify development by consolidating operations onto a single chain. This focused approach will enable faster updates, stronger features, and a more cohesive development environment.
Optimized Chain Architecture and Security Model
By retiring the BNB Beacon Chain and integrating its functionalities into BSC, the overall BNB Chain architecture becomes streamlined. This simplification strengthens the security model, reduces potential vulnerabilities, and makes the network more resilient against attacks.
Implementation of “Proposer-Builder Separation” (PBS)
Current Maximum Extractable Value (MEV) solutions suffer from fragmentation between providers and validators, leading to inefficiencies and potential centralization. This highlights the need for a standardized, open marketplace to streamline processes and enhance decentralization on BNB Chain. Implementing PBS on BSC will establish a transparent and fair block space market.
Optimized BNB Chain Staking Ecosystem
The migration to BSC will also optimize the staking ecosystem by integrating advanced financial tools like LSDFi with native staking. After rigorous testing by core development teams, BNB Chain has successfully incorporated LSDFi capabilities. This integration offers validators and delegators more flexible and efficient staking options, potentially increasing rewards and enhancing overall network participation.
Timeline
-
Prerequisite Step
-
BE2/BEP8 asset holders should transfer their assets to BSC.
-
-
Phase 1 - April 2024: Asset issuance on the BNB Beacon Chain ceases, and validator management and network governance are transferred to BSC. Atomic swap functionality is disabled starting April 15, 2024.
-
Phase 2 - May 2024: Governance and delegation on the Beacon Chain are disabled; all delegations are canceled and returned to user wallets.
-
Phase 3 - May 2024: Cross-chain communication between the Beacon Chain and BSC is severed. Archiving of BNB Beacon Chain and Beacon Chain data stops.
-
Phase 4 - June 2024: A token migration tool is launched to help users recover funds stranded on the Beacon Chain.
For detailed information on the timeline and process, please refer to the BNB Chain Fusion Roadmap.
For Validators
The introduction of native staking on the BNB Smart Chain marks a significant milestone, enabling validators to be created and managed directly on-chain. After the Feynman hard fork, validators originally established on the BNB Beacon Chain must migrate to the BNB Smart Chain to continue operating.
To migrate your validator, you can follow these steps:
-
Create a new validator
The Stake Dapp provides a user-friendly interface for creating a new validator on the BNB Smart Chain. Please follow the detailed instructions in the validator creation guide to set up your new validator. Properly filling out the "identity" field as specified in the guide is crucial for successful migration.
-
Migrate stakes to the new validator
Once your new validator is active, inform your delegators about the migration. They will need to redelegate their stakes to your new validator to continue supporting you. For comprehensive details on stake migration, refer to the stake migration guide.
For BNB Delegators
The BNB Chain community has introduced BEP333: BNB Chain Fusion, a major update marking the retirement of the BNB Beacon Chain from the ecosystem. Following the Feynman hard fork, this transition introduces native staking on the BNB Smart Chain. Stakeholders now have the opportunity to migrate their existing delegations to the new native staking system through two primary methods:
-
Cross-chain redelegation via the BC Staking Portal
-
Undelegate, perform a cross-chain transfer, then re-delegate
For delegations created in BEP153 format, refer to this document for the migration process.
Please see here for a complete step-by-step guide.
Why Migrate Your Delegation Now?
-
Simple—complete your BNB delegation migration in just minutes
-
Enjoy up to ~40x higher staking APY: If delegators do not migrate, their delegated validators may not be selected as active validators, impacting APY. Currently, reward allocations for newly added validators are higher than those for existing validators on the BC chain
-
Delegators who migrate their stakes can now participate in Airdrop Alliance rewards
For BEP2 Token Issuers
Token binding has been introduced to ensure that a token can circulate across both BC and BSC while maintaining a consistent total supply.
-
If a token is bound, it can be transferred between BC and BSC for different use cases. After the final sunset hard fork, cross-chain communication between BC and BSC will be disabled. However, users will still be able to use the token recovery tool to reclaim their bound assets on BSC.
-
If a token remains unbound, assets will no longer be recoverable after the final sunset hard fork. Token owners or issuers must take action to bind their valuable tokens.
Please review the tutorial to confirm whether your token supports cross-chain transfers. If yes, no further action is needed. Otherwise, we recommend using the token binding tool to deploy a BEP20 token on BSC and enable cross-chain functionality. Token issuers are advised to promptly notify asset holders through multiple channels to migrate their assets as soon as possible.
For BEP2 Token Holders
As part of the BEP333 update, the BNB Beacon Chain is即将 being retired. All assets must be migrated to the BNB Smart Chain (BSC) before the final sunset in June. Delays may result in irreversible asset loss. Please read on for detailed migration steps.
High-value BEP2/BEP8 tokens (such as BNB and BTC) can already move freely between the Beacon Chain and BSC without restrictions. Users are strongly advised to transfer their assets to the BSC network to ensure a smooth, lossless transition while maintaining a 1:1 asset ratio. For a complete guide, please refer to this tutorial. While alternative transfer methods exist—such as centralized exchanges or decentralized cross-chain platforms (e.g., Binance.com and Thorswap)—these are not covered in this tutorial.
For detailed information on the timeline and process, please refer to the BNB Chain Fusion Roadmap.
