How did GG, a Solana-based AR crypto game, attract hundreds of thousands of users in just one week?
Thanks to viral marketing, GG got off to a dream start within a week of its launch.

As Solana continues to rebound, its monthly trading volume has risen to the highest level in nearly one to two years, making concepts tied to its ecosystem more likely to gain traction. This week, a game studio called GG.zip captured widespread attention from the crypto community. Through viral marketing of its game GG, it attracted over 140,000 users on its official X account within just one week. Across related posts and replies, five-character alphanumeric codes are now ubiquitous.

According to the official description, GG is a blockchain-based game built on Solana that merges augmented reality (AR) with social networking, aiming to combine AR—similar to Pokemon Go—with cryptocurrency technology to create the first ARC (AR Crypto) gaming ecosystem on Solana. Inspired by elements of "The Hunger Games," players use their smartphones’ augmented reality to search for treasures and ultimately earn rewards. GG.zip claims its team consists of seasoned members from the Solana ecosystem and has received backing from Delphi Digital’s venture arm, as well as prominent KOLs including Cozomo Medici, Gmoney, and Cooper Turley. Delphi Digital previously gained recognition for investing in Axie Infinity and designing its economic model, earning a reputation for foresight in the blockchain gaming space.
In GG, players can participate either as “Hunters” competing in events or as “Sponsors” engaging in speculative activities. As a Hunter, one must explore designated host cities to locate AR GBoxes, each containing a random amount of “G” tokens. Sponsors play a role similar to those in The Hunger Games, supporting their favorite Hunters, collecting player cards, and sharing in their victories. Within the game, Hunters compete to collect as many G tokens as possible, with their statistics tracked on leaderboards displayed on the GG website. The user who collects the most G wins. Importantly, GG’s prize pool is not fixed—it dynamically grows as more Hunters and Sponsors join and transaction volume increases.

On Monday, January 29, after briefly introducing the game mechanics and lore, the GG team immediately announced the launch of an early access version. This preview release is not open to the public but operates via invitation only—players need an invite code to enter. GG’s referral mechanism incentivizes every player to recruit new users: each player receives 10 invitations, and upon successful referral, earns 20% of the “G” claimed by the invited user, plus 10% of the “G” claimed by that user’s own referrals. Fueled by airdrop expectations and this viral referral structure, GG rapidly gained popularity. The founder reported that their website received over 2 million page views in less than 24 hours, causing temporary site outages.
More gameplay details about GG have yet to be disclosed. The early access version, which launched less than a week ago, was shut down at 3:00 AM Beijing time on February 3. According to the official roadmap, the full version of the game is expected to launch in New York this spring, while players will be able to redeem their earned “G” tokens for rewards this fall.
