Scroll is an Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution designed as a "zkEVM"—a zk-rollup compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).
After deploying its mainnet in October 2023, Scroll became one of the first active zkEVMs in the crypto economy and has since grown into one of the top 20 largest L2 networks by scale.
How Scroll Works
At its core, Scroll operates through a seamless multi-layer system. Its settlement layer acts as a bridge between Ethereum and Scroll, ensuring data availability and transaction ordering on the L2, as well as verifying zkEVM validity proofs.
Working in parallel is the sequencing layer, responsible for transaction execution. It combines the efforts of execution nodes—which process transactions sent to Scroll—and rollup nodes, which batch these transactions and publish them to Ethereum to ensure data availability. Additionally, rollup nodes submit validity proofs to Ethereum, which are crucial for transaction finality.
Complementing these layers is the proving layer, dedicated to generating zkEVM validity proofs to ensure the correctness of L2 transactions. This layer includes a set of provers and a coordinator who not only generate these proofs but also send them to the Ethereum blockchain for final confirmation.

According to L2Beat, Scroll is currently the 17th largest L2 in the Ethereum scaling landscape, with a TVL of $63.5 million, making it one of the most actively used zkEVMs in production today. Much of this activity stems from Scroll’s early DeFi ecosystem, now spread across approximately 50 applications.
Is a Scroll Token Coming?

Despite speculation about Scroll launching its own native token, the network currently operates entirely around ETH.
As the L2 grows and moves toward greater decentralization, it is likely that a token airdrop will eventually occur to empower community governance. However, official details on this front remain unclear for now.

The Road Ahead
Scroll is clearly one of the pioneers in zkEVM technology. Since its mainnet launch in 2023, it has rapidly risen to become a key player in Ethereum's scaling landscape. While experimenting with the L2 may make sense to potentially qualify for a future Scroll airdrop, learning about this network is valuable in itself, as doing so will give you broader experience within the L2 ecosystem.
