Humanode: The Future of Truly Decentralized Infrastructure
1 Human = 1 Node = 1 Vote, meaning each person can deploy only one node, and each node has only one voting right.
By: Mlixy

Project Background
HUMANODE draws inspiration from blockchain's founding ideals—decentralized, open, fair, and transparent networks that allow everyone to participate and contribute.

However, modern PoW and PoS protocols inherently suffer from a "rich-get-richer" problem, leading to the concentration of power and resources, creating validator oligarchies and mining cartels, ultimately undermining blockchain security and democracy.
For example, according to Bitnodes data as of November 20, 2023, there are only about 11,000 Bitcoin nodes globally. According to Ethernodes, there are only around 14,000 Ethereum nodes worldwide on the same date. The distribution of these nodes is also uneven, with most concentrated in North America and Europe, while regions such as Asia and Africa remain relatively underrepresented. This means control and benefits of blockchain networks are not truly distributed among people globally but rather monopolized by a few institutions and individuals.
HUMANODE was created to solve this issue by using biometric technology to ensure that each node is backed by a real, unique, living human—not any form of machine or software.

HUMANODE believes all humans are equal, and therefore, all nodes are equal in fee distribution, validation, and voting rights.
HUMANODE’s slogan is "1 Human = 1 Node = 1 Vote", meaning each person can deploy only one node, and each node holds exactly one vote. In this way, HUMANODE aims to create a truly decentralized, democratic, and Sybil-resistant blockchain network where everyone can participate and benefit fairly.
Project Introduction
HUMANODE is built on the Substrate framework—a modular blockchain development platform enabling customizable, scalable, and interoperable blockchain networks. Leveraging Substrate’s flexibility and modularity, HUMANODE can adapt different consensus algorithms, smart contract layers, governance models, etc., based on various use cases and requirements.

HUMANODE’s core technology lies in its private, decentralized biometric identification system, which includes the following components:
Private Biometric Search and Matching: HUMANODE employs AI to analyze facial features to prove an individual’s uniqueness without revealing personal information. HUMANODE does not store identifiable biometric data; instead, it converts them into irreversible hash values for comparison, detecting duplicate or similar faces. This ensures user privacy and security while maintaining network uniqueness.
Decentralized, Auditable Liveness Detection: HUMANODE uses over 60 AI modules to verify that a real, live human is present in front of the camera—not a photo, mask, or deepfake. The system randomly prompts users to perform specific actions or answer questions within a time limit, then uses AI to assess liveness. This prevents deception and attacks while ensuring network vitality.
EVM-Compatible Smart Contract Layer: HUMANODE supports creating and executing smart contracts via the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This allows compatibility with Ethereum’s ecosystem, enabling developers to easily deploy and run decentralized applications (DApps) on HUMANODE. It also offers specialized smart contracts like the Human Verification Contract, allowing any DApp or platform to leverage HUMANODE’s biometric tech to verify user humanity.
Highlights
Key highlights of HUMANODE include:
True Decentralization: HUMANODE is a network composed of millions of human-operated nodes, each equal in status, with no centralization or oligarchy. It does not rely on hardware or capital but on human existence and uniqueness, achieving true decentralization.
High Degree of Democracy: HUMANODE is governed collectively by human nodes, each holding one vote, eliminating power or interest imbalances. It uses a decentralized decision-making system called Vortex, enabling effective and transparent communication and collaboration among nodes, thereby realizing high-level democracy.
Strong Sybil Resistance: HUMANODE prevents Sybil attacks through private, decentralized biometrics. Every node must pass facial recognition and liveness detection to prove their human identity—no machines or software can join or influence the network. Advanced AI safeguards against all forms of spoofing and attacks, delivering robust Sybil resistance.

BotBasher: Humanode’s BotBasher is a Discord tool that eliminates bots by biometrically authenticating users. By adding BotBasher to your server and linking it to a special role, you can ensure only unique, living individuals receive that role. User accounts are verified across Discord—if BotBasher is installed on other servers, users are automatically authenticated there too.
Currently adopted by 367 communities, with over 260,490 biometric authorizations. Notable adopters include SEI, Omni Network, Mantle Network, and BitMart Fan Community.
Use Cases
HUMANODE’s use cases include, but are not limited to:

Sybil-Resistant On-Chain Biometrics
HUMANODE provides Sybil-resistant, private on-chain biometrics for any Web3 project needing to verify users’ human identity—such as social networks, DAOs, NFTs, DeFi platforms, etc.
These projects can integrate HUMANODE’s biometric verification via the Human Verification Contract, ensuring every user is a real, unique, living human—not a bot or script.
This helps prevent fraud, abuse, manipulation, and more. For example, HUMANODE enables social platforms to achieve genuine user interaction, free from fake accounts and spam armies; empowers DAOs with fair governance, preventing manipulation by a few; ensures NFT creators maintain originality, avoiding duplication and piracy; and enables DeFi platforms to offer equal participation, countering wealth concentration and capital dominance.
Sybil-Resistant Ownership of Real-World Assets
HUMANODE enables Sybil-resistant ownership for tokenized real-world assets such as art, land, and property.
It prevents multiple addresses from claiming ownership of the same asset, establishing genuine and trustworthy ownership. For instance, HUMANODE helps art platforms enable authentic collecting and trading, avoiding counterfeits and fraud; assists land registries with accurate recording and transfer, preventing duplicates and disputes; and supports real estate platforms with legitimate leasing and sales, reducing vacancy and squatting issues.
Human-Based Automated Market Makers (AMM)
Automated market makers like Uniswap or PancakeSwap simplify trading on decentralized platforms, but they come with risks. While they eliminate intermediaries, they’re vulnerable to manipulation such as insider trading. Bad actors can disrupt liquidity pools, distort price ratios, and trick honest traders into poor trades.
HUMANODE applies on-chain biometric mapping to AMMs. Each liquidity provider will be a verified human, not a programmed bot designed to manipulate. By tying identity to unique facial features, HUMANODE ensures liquidity pools aren’t playgrounds for market manipulators.
Genuinely Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs)
DAOs represent decentralized governance, yet they're far from perfect. With the rise of DAOs has come a surge in related scams. Anyone can create multiple wallets, accumulate governance tokens, and effectively hijack the entire decision-making process. This is governance anarchy disguised as democracy.
Integrating private on-chain biometrics could transform this landscape. Each DAO governance token can be tied to a real person, with their unique biometric signature serving as a trust anchor. This ensures pure one-person-one-vote governance.
Additionally, quadratic voting—one proposed solution to oligarchy in PoS and DPoS systems—requires nonlinear increases in voting power per member. Its implementation demands careful design, particularly regarding Sybil attacks. By binding one person to one account via on-chain biometric mapping, implementing quadratic voting becomes significantly easier.
Decentralized Insurance with Human-Only Policyholders
Blockchain anonymity creates safe havens for fraudsters who file multiple claims or manipulate premiums. Wonder why decentralized insurance hasn’t exploded as expected?
Enter private on-chain biometric mapping—and witness a transformation. Policyholders must undergo unique, real-time biometric verification before obtaining a policy or filing a claim. When every claim ties back to a living, breathing, unique individual, fraud has no room to exist.
Team
The HUMANODE team consists of professionals from diverse countries and backgrounds, bringing extensive experience and expertise in blockchain, DeFi, finance, technology, marketing, and more.

Among them, DATO serves as Co-Founder and Director & Head of Strategy at Paradigm Research.

Funding
In April 2022, Humanode announced a $2 million seed round led by Republic Capital, with participation from Tribe Capital, Blizzard, Wintermute, GravityX Capital, Shima Capital, Genblock, AU21, StaFi, and Polygon co-founders Jaynti Kanani and Sandeep Nailwal.

Summary
HUMANODE is an independent Layer 1 blockchain network built on the Substrate framework. It leverages decentralized biometric technology to verify the existence and uniqueness of human-operated nodes, providing Sybil resistance without relying on PoW or PoS. HUMANODE aims to build a truly distributed, democratic, and Sybil-resistant Layer 1 blockchain.
