Monad is a new proof-of-stake (PoS) Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible Layer 1 blockchain that offers throughput several orders of magnitude higher than any existing smart contract blockchain, supporting 10,000 smart contract transactions per second (TPS).
Monad introduces optimizations in four key areas:
MonadBFT: A high-performance consensus mechanism based on HotStuff with additional research improvements, designed to provide secure and efficient block validation.
Deferred Execution: Allows consensus and execution to operate independently, giving validators greater flexibility by enabling them to execute transactions at more suitable times rather than immediately during consensus.
Parallel Execution: Unlike the sequential approach used in traditional blockchain systems, Monad employs parallel execution to process multiple transactions simultaneously, improving network efficiency and reducing latency.
MonadDb: A custom database for storing blockchain state, this optimized database is designed for parallel processing, enabling it to easily handle large transaction volumes while supporting efficient SSD storage and asynchronous I/O operations.
Keone, co-founder and CEO of Monad Labs, has nearly a decade of experience in high-frequency trading, focusing on building high-performance trading systems. He joined Jump Crypto in 2021, where he realized that the crypto market needed higher-performance EVM execution. At the time, most scaling efforts were focused on Layer 2 solutions, data availability, and other directions, with no one working to make the execution layer itself—both top and bottom—more efficient. In early 2022, Keone co-founded Monad with two other co-founders.
In April 2024, Monad Labs announced a $225 million funding round at a $3 billion valuation, led by Paradigm and joined by over 50 institutions including Electric Capital, Coinbase Ventures, and Wintermute Ventures.
This marks the largest cryptocurrency funding round of 2024 to date and has helped popularize the technical concept of "parallel EVM."
Beyond its technical capabilities, Monad is widely praised for its community culture, which has grown to almost "cult-like" proportions. Fueled by a strong, self-driven community, Monad has developed unique memes that continuously evolve—from the purple PEPE to Molandak.
