The Boys of Summer is a digital gaming art piece and generative PFP collection by Mitchell F Chan, exploring the world's most popular pastime: self-quantification.
This participatory market performance artwork consists of an evolving character creation process that unfolds entirely within a web browser. Collectors purchase 3D baseball character PFPs, each serving as a player in the game. At the end of the game, collectors can choose to assign their accumulated stats as metadata to their player.
Through a playful, provocative lens, using baseball avatars and statistics as creative media, this work prompts us to examine our own value systems and inherent biases that shape our perceived potential, as well as how society defines what constitutes "success."
Once you own your character, you can connect your wallet to the game. When you click "Start" in the game, your character's "life" journey begins. In the pursuit of "victory" and becoming a professional baseball player, you'll be asked to provide a series of inputs about your character—your batting, strength, and other baseball-related traits. But as the game progresses, these statistics become increasingly personalized—how much time you should spend sleeping, oral care, and so on. Ultimately, at the game's conclusion, you’ll possess a large set of data points that now constitute your PFP’s metadata. Only then will the rarity of certain traits be revealed—representing a true fusion of nature and nurture, where your performance in the game can influence your character’s attributes, but only within the limits allowed by their inherent potential.
