TechFlow, September 23 — According to Coinbase's disclosure, the company will collaborate with Cloudflare to launch the x402 Foundation, aiming to establish x402 as a universal standard for AI-driven payments and advance agent commerce.
The x402 protocol leverages the HTTP "402 Payment Required" status code to embed payment functionality directly into web interactions, enabling AI agents, APIs, and applications to seamlessly exchange value just as they do data. The protocol currently supports various use cases including on-demand AI usage, real-time data analytics, creator micropayments, stored media, and agent commerce.
The x402 Foundation will focus on three core areas: establishing neutral and open governance standards, supporting ecosystem growth through funding and tools, and ensuring cross-platform interoperability.
