TechFlow, on August 22, the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong reminded the public to be vigilant against scammers impersonating the SFC to conduct fraudulent activities.
The authority found that fraudsters have been posing as certain senior SFC executives and well-known stock market commentators, contacting the public through phishing emails and forged documents. This includes sending fraudulent emails pretending to be Christopher Wilson, Executive Director of Enforcement, aiming to install malware or ransomware onto recipients' computer systems upon reply. Others have posed as SFC's Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Yen Chi-yiu, sending phishing emails under the guise of a "data verification procedure" to obtain recipients' contact information, targeting SFC-licensed corporations and their employees.
The Hong Kong SFC emphasized that all the above messages and claims are false, and urges the public to remain highly alert when handling unsolicited communications.
