TechFlow, August 21 — According to The Block, North Wales Police are investigating a major cryptocurrency scam. A criminal impersonated a senior UK law enforcement official and used social engineering tactics to trick victims into entering their wallet seed phrases on a phishing website, successfully stealing approximately $2.8 million (€2.1 million) worth of Bitcoin.
According to police, the fraudster claimed that a suspect's phone contained the victim's identification documents and urged the victim to "protect" their assets. The victim then entered their recovery phrase on a sophisticated counterfeit website, resulting in the theft of funds within minutes.
