TechFlow, August 21 — According to Cointelegraph, police in North Wales are investigating a major cryptocurrency theft. A fraudster impersonated a senior UK police officer and successfully stole 2.1 million pounds (approximately 2.8 million USD) worth of Bitcoin from a victim.
Authorities described this as a "highly targeted and sophisticated scam," with the perpetrator likely having obtained the victim's personal information through a data breach. The fraudster claimed that a suspect in possession of the victim's identification had been arrested, creating a sense of fear and urgency. The victim was then prompted to log into their cold wallet via a link provided by the scammer. Believing they were complying with official police instructions, the victim entered their recovery phrase on a meticulously forged website, resulting in the theft of their funds.
