TechFlow news, July 11 — According to Jinshi Data citing Politico, OpenAI has asked a California political finance regulator to investigate a nonprofit organization challenging its multi-billion-dollar business plans, accusing it of violating state lobbying laws, reigniting questions about the group's ties to Musk.
The complaint filed with California’s Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) alleges that the Coalition for AI Nonprofit Integrity (CANI) may have fabricated leadership identities and failed to report lobbying expenditures related to a now-weakened state bill that could have blocked the maker of ChatGPT from transitioning into a for-profit entity.
This marks the latest escalation by OpenAI against the group. Meanwhile, OpenAI is also engaged in a legal battle with Musk, who was once a business co-founder of OpenAI and opposes the company's restructuring plan for fundraising, arguing it deviates from its original nonprofit mission "to benefit the public." Becky Warren, a spokesperson for CANI, said via email that her organization had not yet received the complaint as of Thursday.
