TechFlow news, July 4 — According to Fortune, Microsoft's Threat Intelligence team has shut down 3,000 Outlook and Hotmail accounts created by North Korean IT workers to combat this global fraud scheme. Microsoft has named the operation "Jasper Sleet," in which North Korean IT workers use fake or stolen identities to secure remote jobs at global tech companies, channeling the earnings to fund nuclear weapons programs.
The U.S. Department of Justice simultaneously announced actions against the scheme, seizing hundreds of laptops, 29 financial accounts, and shutting down nearly twenty websites. Microsoft stated that these fraudsters are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence to refine their tactics, including correcting grammatical errors, enhancing photos, and experimenting with voice-altering software. Microsoft has developed machine learning solutions to identify suspicious accounts, particularly detecting "impossible time travel" risks between Western countries and China or Russia.
