TechFlow news, June 24 — According to an official announcement by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Kevin Muhlendorf will assume the role of the agency's new Inspector General starting July 28. Muhlendorf previously served as a lawyer at both the SEC and the Department of Justice, and for the past nine years has been a partner at Wiley Rein LLP in Washington, D.C., focusing on securities enforcement matters.
From 2023 to 2024, Muhlendorf served as Acting Inspector General of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), where he led audit and investigative operations and designed and implemented a whistleblower reward pilot program. Since 2015, he has served as an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law, and holds credentials as a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and a Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP).
SEC Chair Paul S. Atkins stated that Muhlendorf’s combination of experience in internal investigations, compliance programs, and enforcement makes him an ideal choice who will ensure the agency’s operations remain transparent, efficient, and effective. The Office of the Inspector General is an independent unit that promotes integrity, efficiency, and effectiveness in the SEC’s key programs and operations through rigorous, objective oversight.
