TechFlow news, on June 23, according to CoinDesk, the Norwegian Labour Party government recently announced plans to impose a temporary ban on new cryptocurrency mining data centers using energy-intensive proof-of-work (PoW) systems, with the measure expected to take effect in autumn 2025.
Norwegian Minister of Digitalization Karianne Tung stated: "Cryptocurrency mining consumes enormous amounts of electricity while creating almost no jobs or income for local communities." She emphasized that this move reflects the government's clear intention to "limit cryptocurrency mining in Norway as much as possible."
Despite Norway's abundant renewable hydropower resources, which have long attracted Bitcoin miners seeking low-cost clean energy, regulators believe these continuously high-capacity power resources should be better utilized in manufacturing, heating, or AI data processing sectors.
