TechFlow news, May 24 — According to Cointelegraph, 35 U.S. House lawmakers have urged the Department of Justice to investigate Donald Trump's dinner event held on May 22 for top memecoin investors, citing concerns over "foreign influence on U.S. policy decisions" and "potential corruption and violations of anti-foreign emoluments clauses."
In their letter to the DOJ, the lawmakers requested Edward Sullivan, Acting Director of the Public Integrity Section, to launch an investigation into the dinner to determine whether federal bribery laws or the Constitution's Foreign Emoluments Clause were violated. Bloomberg reported that most attendees of the dinner were likely foreign nationals.
U.S. law prohibits foreign nationals from contributing to American political activities. The lawmakers argued that the $TRUMP memecoin and its promotion of exclusive presidential access through the dinner event create a pathway for foreign governments to purchase influence over the president without disclosing their identities.
