TechFlow news, May 20 — According to The Block, the U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into Coinbase's recent cyberattack, including involvement from its criminal division in Washington. As Bloomberg reported on May 19, hackers attempted to extort $20 million using stolen customer data. Coinbase disclosed last Thursday that the incident could result in expenses ranging from $180 million to $400 million, including remediation costs and customer compensation. The company stated that attackers did not gain access to any customer funds, private keys, or login systems, and less than 1% of users were affected. Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal confirmed the company is cooperating with U.S. and international law enforcement agencies in the investigation.
