TechFlow news, May 16 — According to TheVerge, Anthropic has responded to citation errors made by its AI assistant Claude in legal documents, calling them "embarrassing and unintentional mistakes," rather than deliberate fabrications. In a filing submitted on April 30 by Anthropic data scientist Olivia Chen during a copyright lawsuit with music publishers, incorrect citations were included and subsequently labeled as "entirely fabricated" by attorneys for Universal Music Group (UMG).
In a response filed Thursday, Anthropic's defense attorney Ivana Dukanovic stated that while the sources in question do exist, Claude added incorrect titles and author information when formatting the legal citations. Although the company conducted "manual citation checks" and corrected erroneous volume and page numbers, these wording inaccuracies went undetected.
