TechFlow news, May 15 — Coinbase announced that cybercriminals obtained personal data from less than 1% of its monthly active users by bribing overseas customer support staff. However, no passwords, private keys, or funds were compromised, and Prime accounts were unaffected. The criminals subsequently attempted to extort $20 million from Coinbase and used the stolen data to launch targeted phishing attacks against users. Coinbase has firmly refused to pay the ransom and instead established a $20 million reward fund to encourage reporting and assist in the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators. The company has pledged full compensation for all affected users.
