TechFlow, May 15 — According to CoinDesk, Caroline Pham, acting chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), said she will step down after a new chair is appointed. At the same time, Republican commissioner Summer Mersinger has announced her resignation to become CEO of the Blockchain Association.
If former CFTC commissioner and former a16z policy head Brian Quintenz is confirmed by the Senate as the new chair, the CFTC will be left with only two commissioners: Quintenz and Democratic commissioner Kristin Johnson. This could impact the CFTC's progress on key policy-making matters such as cryptocurrency regulation. Typically, the CFTC is composed of five commissioners, including one chair, two from the majority party, and two from the minority party.
