TechFlow news, May 14 — According to Red Net, police in Xiangtan, Hunan successfully dismantled a criminal gang specializing in WeChat account-related black-market operations. The group obtained WeChat accounts through fraud and resold them at high prices for illegal activities. Police arrested 24 suspects and seized over 3,000 mobile phones used in the crimes, with the case involving more than 1.2 million yuan.
The gang primarily used "earning red packets by posting fake positive reviews" as bait to trick victims into providing their WeChat usernames and passwords. Stolen accounts were categorized by registration age into monthly, six-month, and annual accounts, priced between 650 and 950 yuan, with transactions conducted via cryptocurrency. These stolen accounts were mainly funneled into telecom fraud and other criminal activities. The suspects have now been transferred to the procuratorate for review and prosecution.
