TechFlow news, May 10 — According to Cointelegraph Brasil, the Belo Horizonte City Council in Brazil has preliminarily approved a bill designating the city as the "Bitcoin Capital." The bill passed with 20 votes in favor, 8 opposed, and 6 abstentions, allowing the municipal government to accept Bitcoin (BTC) for tax payments and municipal fees, while encouraging local businesses to adopt cryptocurrencies.
Proposed by councilor Vile Santos (PL), the initiative is named the "Bitcoin Freedom" program and aims to promote cryptocurrency innovation in Belo Horizonte. The bill also includes provisions for educational activities on cryptocurrencies for merchants and consumers, with participating businesses receiving special promotion at official municipal events.
The vote revealed clear political divisions, with members of the PL party supporting the bill, while members of the PT and PSOL parties unanimously voted against it. The bill must undergo a second round of voting; if passed, it will be sent to Mayor Álvaro Damião (União Brasil) for signature or veto.
