TechFlow news — On March 21, according to The Block, officials in the Trump administration have drafted a proposal to restructure the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and leverage blockchain technology as part of a more transparent procurement process.
A document circulating within the U.S. State Department reportedly outlines parts of the proposal that recommend creating a "modernized, performance-based procurement" system, stating that "all allocations will be secured and tracked via blockchain technology, significantly enhancing security, transparency, and traceability." However, it remains unclear how such a system would operate or what type of blockchain technology—public, private, or hybrid—would be used.
The document adds: "This approach will encourage innovation and efficiency among implementing partners and allow for more flexible and responsive project planning focused on tangible impact, rather than merely completing activities and inputs."
USAID is the government agency responsible for administering U.S. foreign aid and development assistance. The agency faces significant proposed cuts following recommendations from DOGE, Elon Musk's government efficiency task force. Critics, including President Trump, have accused USAID of wasteful spending, such as funding diversity initiatives and overseas tourism promotion.
