TechFlow reports on March 17 that, according to Cryptoslate, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Thailand seized 63 illegal cryptocurrency mining devices valued at approximately 2 million Thai baht (60,000 USD) from three abandoned houses in Pathum Thani Province last Friday.
The operation followed complaints from local residents about electricity theft from utility poles and transformers. The illegal mining equipment is estimated to have caused over 11 million Thai baht (about 327,000 USD) in losses to the Metropolitan Electricity Authority.
Thailand classifies Bitcoin miners as manufacturers and levies relevant taxes; however, illegal cryptocurrency mining has remained a persistent issue in Thailand and across Southeast Asia for years.
