TechFlow news — On March 12, according to Jinshi News, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to block Congress from quickly challenging President Trump's tariff policies that have triggered market volatility. The vote effectively undermined a challenge initiated by Washington State Democratic Representative Suzan DelBene against Trump's imposition of tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
The blocking provision was skillfully embedded within a procedural vote on a six-month temporary funding bill proposed by Republicans. DelBene had previously sought a forced vote under the National Emergencies Act—a law granting the president special powers during emergencies—which Trump invoked to justify his tariff actions. Under this Act, the House could have forced a vote within 15 days to overturn the president’s emergency declaration, with the requirement that the Senate also pass a corresponding resolution for it to take effect.
However, Tuesday’s vote altered the way the House calculates remaining calendar days in 2025, effectively preventing such challenge votes from occurring this year and solidifying the Trump administration’s dominance over trade policy.
