On March 3, Trump told media at the White House that Japan has been steering its currency lower, putting "us at a very unfair disadvantage." He claimed that imposing tariffs would "quickly and effectively bring fairness."
In response, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated at a press conference on the 4th that Japan is not implementing any policy to deliberately devalue the yen. Relevant Japanese authorities will continue close consultations with U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent. Japanese Finance Minister Katō Katsunobu also said Japan has not adopted a policy of weakening the yen, and that since 2022, the Japanese government and central bank have been attempting to correct the trend of yen depreciation and dollar appreciation through exchange rate interventions.
