TechFlow reports, according to The Block, that U.S. President Trump has reached a prisoner swap deal with Russia, exchanging Alexander Vinnik, the former operator of the BTC-e exchange, for Marc Fogel, an American teacher detained in Russia.
Vinnik pleaded guilty in May 2024 in a San Francisco federal court to conspiracy to commit money laundering. The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that during its operation, BTC-e facilitated the laundering of over $4 billion in criminal proceeds and was involved in laundering funds stolen from Mt. Gox. Vinnik was arrested in Greece in 2017, sentenced to five years in prison by a French court in 2020, and extradited to the United States in 2022.
