According to Bloomberg, Eric Council Jr., a 25-year-old man from Alabama, pleaded guilty in a federal court in Washington to participating in the hacking of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) official X account and posting false information about approval of a bitcoin ETF. The sentencing has been scheduled for May 16. The incident occurred on January 9, 2024, when hackers breached the SEC's official X account and posted misinformation about bitcoin ETF approval, causing a temporary spike in bitcoin prices. Prosecutors allege that Council Jr. used forged identification and tricked employees at a mobile phone store into assisting him in gaining access to victims' phones. The SEC officially approved the first spot bitcoin ETF applications the following day.
