TechFlow reports, citing DL News, that a 26-year-old man from Indiana, James Watt, has been sentenced to three years of probation for creating approximately 30,000 fake IDs. Court documents show that Watt worked for a counterfeit ID website over four years and received 14 bitcoins (worth about $1.4 million) as payment.
During a search of his residence, authorities discovered that he had created a fake Missouri driver's license in the name of Marvel superhero Thor. John Childress, acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, said the case highlights how bitcoin, despite growing acceptance by mainstream financial institutions, continues to be used as a tool for illicit transactions. The bitcoins involved in the case were seized by the government in November last year.
