Joseph Bankman, a professor at Stanford Law School, and Barbara Fried have held meetings in recent weeks with lawyers and others believed to be close to Trump to discuss clemency for their son, who is serving a 25-year sentence for fraud convictions. It remains unclear whether they have directly contacted the White House. Trump’s prior use of clemency powers, including granting pardons to figures like Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, has motivated them to urgently present their case.
