TechFlow reports on January 17 that, according to CNBC, open-source developer revenue platform Merit Systems has announced the completion of a $10 million seed round co-led by a16z crypto and Blockchain Capital, valuing the company at $55.5 million. The project was co-founded by Sam Ragsdale, a former engineer at a16z and Google; Ryan Sproule, a former AWS engineer; and Mason Hall. It is headquartered in Brooklyn’s historic Domino Sugar Factory redevelopment complex.
Mheit Systems aims to solve the "attribution problem" in open-source software. Statistics show that over 97% of daily applications rely on open-source code, yet developers lack sustainable economic incentives. The platform plans to launch a broader release by the end of February 2024, building a protocol to align developer contributions with earnings, enabling users to directly pay software creators. Chris Dixon, general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, stated that open source has been chronically underfunded and overly reliant on altruistic contributions, and Merit's solution will help build a healthier open-source ecosystem.
