TechFlow news — On December 12, according to TechCrunch, Byte Federal, one of the largest Bitcoin ATM operators in the United States, said that personal data from thousands of users may have been exposed in a recent security breach.
In documents filed with the Maine Attorney General's office, Byte Federal stated that hackers attempted to access data from 58,000 customers, including names, addresses, phone numbers, government-issued IDs, Social Security numbers, transaction activity, and user photos. The company said an unnamed attacker exploited a vulnerability in third-party software to gain access to its network. In a November blog post, the company indicated the vulnerability was in GitLab, a popular developer platform.
Byte Federal operates over 1,200 Bitcoin ATMs (electronic kiosks for buying and selling cryptocurrency) across the U.S. The company said it has performed hard resets on all customer accounts and updated internal passwords.
