TechFlow reported on December 3 that Cobra, the maintainer of the Bitcoin.org domain, issued a warning via Bitcoin.com about a potential user-activated soft fork (UASF) on the Bitcoin network in 2025. This UASF could be driven by anonymous developers outside the Bitcoin Core project aiming to introduce the CTV (Check Template Verify) feature. CTV is designed to bring smart contract functionality to Bitcoin by allowing users to set conditions for spending bitcoins from specific wallets.
The proposal originates from Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 119 (BIP 119), introduced by Jeremy Lubin, primarily aimed at enhancing transaction security. Supporters argue that CTV would enable more secure cold storage solutions, while opponents express concerns that it might compromise Bitcoin's fungibility and increase codebase complexity. Cobra noted that due to potential legal risks, these changes may be advanced by developers outside the Bitcoin Core team, potentially triggering a major split between "purists" and "improvement advocates."
