TechFlow reported on November 29 that, according to Decrypt, the Cantonal Parliament of Bern, Switzerland, passed a proposal by 85 votes in favor and 46 opposed, to explore using Bitcoin mining to consume surplus electricity and stabilize the power grid. The proposal was introduced on March 14, 2024, by a cross-party parliamentary Bitcoin group and was adopted despite opposition from the government.
The proposal requires the government to submit a report on three key aspects: identifying unused energy areas in the Canton of Bern, assessing the feasibility of collaborating with Swiss mining companies on Bitcoin mining, and analyzing its potential to stabilize the power grid during periods of electricity supply fluctuations. The proposal received support from multiple political parties, including the Swiss People's Party, Green Liberal Party, The Centre, and EDU.
