TechFlow news — On November 20, according to Cointelegraph, the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. has acquired the laptop of former U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent Chris Janczewski, a device used to track the 120,000 bitcoins stolen in the 2016 Bitfinex exchange hack. The laptop will go on display by the end of 2024 in the "Value of Money" exhibition hall at the National Museum of American History.
Ellen Feingold, curator of the National Numismatic Collection (NNC), said the laptop is a key piece of evidence from a major criminal case and illustrates the evolving understanding of cryptocurrency. Janczewski, now Head of Global Investigations at blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs, treated the blockchain as a digital crime scene, ultimately identifying suspects and recovering stolen funds.
