TechFlow reported on October 23 that Buenos Aires, Argentina’s capital, has announced the implementation of a digital identity system based on blockchain technology and zero-knowledge cryptography on its government service platform miBA. Since October 1, over 3.6 million active miBA users have received decentralized digital identities (DIDs) developed by Web3 company Extrimian called QuarkID.
The QuarkID wallet is powered by the Ethereum scaling protocol ZKsync Era and leverages zero-knowledge proof technology. Diego Fernández, Secretary of Innovation and Digital Transformation of Buenos Aires, stated that this initiative not only enhances privacy and security but also establishes personal data ownership as a fundamental right protected by advanced cryptography.
The system operates under a self-sovereign model, enabling citizens to securely manage their credentials when interacting with government agencies, businesses, and other individuals. This marks one of several blockchain initiatives launched by Buenos Aires in recent years, following prior announcements to tokenize official documents such as birth and marriage certificates.
