TechFlow reports that on October 22, according to Decrypt, AMLBot disclosed a case of "close-range intrusion." A former CEO of a cryptocurrency project lost $450,000 after connecting to the Wi-Fi network of a "close friend." The victim, Tom (a pseudonym), had previously received $500,000 from selling his company shares and relocated to Asia. After meeting this so-called "close friend" locally, Tom's phone was damaged by rain. Following repairs and re-entering his recovery phrase, he discovered his funds had been stolen.
AMLBot's investigation revealed that the stolen funds were transferred to a Binance account. Further tracking showed that Tom’s "close friend" had compromised his device via the Wi-Fi network. AMLBot stated that it has recorded seven similar cases over the past three months, involving amounts ranging from 13 bitcoins to $300,000. Binance has now frozen the relevant account. Tom has recovered $380,000, with the remaining $70,000 to be repaid in installments. AMLBot urges users never to access cryptocurrency websites or wallets over public Wi-Fi networks and recommends enabling transaction notification features.
