TechFlow news — On October 15, Andre Cronje, Chief Technology Officer at Sonic Labs, questioned the practicality of blockchain appchains in a recent article. Andre Cronje pointed out that while appchain technology may sound appealing, it faces significant challenges in practice:
1. Difficulty in issuing native stablecoins and integrating trusted oracles
2. Additional development effort required for tooling and wallet configurations
3. Challenges in achieving interoperability and network effects
Andre Cronje argues that modern blockchains have largely resolved issues related to speed and throughput, making appchains feel like an engineering solution in search of a problem. As an alternative, he proposes addressing value capture through revenue-sharing models, noting that applications like Uniswap could capture value by directly sharing gas fees without needing to operate their own independent chain.
