TechFlow reported on September 19 that, according to CoinDesk, Ethereum developers reached a consensus during Thursday's meeting to split the upcoming hard fork upgrade, Pectra, into two phases. Alex Stokes, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, stated that this move aims to narrow the scope of the upgrade and reduce the risk of code errors.
The first phase will include eight Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), among which is EIP-7702—conceived by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in just 22 minutes—intended to improve wallet user experience. The second phase may involve enhancements to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and the introduction of PeerDAS functionality beneficial for Layer 2 networks.
Developers still plan to complete the first phase of the upgrade by early 2025. Stokes emphasized that keeping the upgrade scope small and precise will help accelerate the implementation of both phases.
