TechFlow news: As MakerDAO rebrands to Sky and launches its new stablecoin Sky Dollar (USDS), community members of Gnosis Chain are reconsidering their choice of gas token.
The current sidechain operated by Gnosis uses xDAI, a bridged version of DAI, to pay for network gas fees. As part of MakerDAO's "Endgame" plan, DAI holders can upgrade their tokens 1:1 to USDS and receive rewards in native tokens.
However, USDS introduces more centralized features, including the ability to "freeze" wallet addresses and restrict access for users from the U.S. and U.K., raising concerns among Gnosis Chain users about the reliability of using USDS to cover transaction costs.
Community members stress that the freezing capability of USDS contradicts Gnosis' principles of decentralization. In response, Gnosis Chain participants are discussing several alternatives, such as adopting decentralized stablecoins like RAI and LUSD, or using a basket of currencies.
Another proposal suggests using Gnosis (GNO) as the gas token, aligning with other blockchain protocols. The discussion remains at an early stage, and no formal proposal has been submitted yet.
