TechFlow reports that zkEVM project Scroll has announced the Darwin upgrade, scheduled for August 21. The main feature of this upgrade is the use of a single aggregated proof to process multiple batches, eliminating the need to finalize each batch individually and expected to reduce gas fees by 34%.
The Darwin upgrade will recursively bundle multiple consecutive batches into a single validity proof, trading slightly longer finality times for lower confirmation costs.
In addition to improving the fee structure, the Darwin upgrade will introduce a timestamp-based upgrade mechanism to enhance the accuracy and reliability of upgrade timing.
The Scroll team has also released detailed technical changes and an upgrade timeline, including updates to contracts, nodes, and circuits. This upgrade does not alter the state transition function and is therefore backward compatible; however, node operators are strongly advised to upgrade to version v5.6.0 prior to the fork timestamp.
