TechFlow reports that recently, the Xuhui District People's Procuratorate of Shanghai announced via its official public account that local police cracked a case involving the theft of cryptocurrency through backdoor programs. According to sources, Huobi HTX actively cooperated with Shanghai police during the investigation by providing blockchain data analysis to help identify and apprehend the suspects.
In this case, victim Ou had millions of RMB worth of cryptocurrency stolen from a wallet application. The investigation revealed that four wallet developers implanted backdoors into the software used by Ou, enabling them to obtain users’ private keys, mnemonic phrases, and other sensitive information. One of the individuals then stole Ou’s cryptocurrency. Ultimately, the Xuhui District People's Court sentenced all four defendants to fixed-term imprisonment and imposed fines for the crime of illegally obtaining data from computer information systems.
The successful resolution of this case and the court's ruling demonstrate that stealing others' cryptocurrency constitutes a criminal offense. The state not only recognizes the protection of cryptocurrency assets but also actively combats crimes targeting such digital property.
