TechFlow news: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange pleaded guilty to violating the U.S. Espionage Act on Wednesday and was released, ending a 14-year legal battle. Assange's brother, Gabriel Shipton, said that cryptocurrency donations from the AssangeDAO community saved Assange.
In 2022, AssangeDAO raised approximately $53 million in ETH by selling symbolic NFTs, with proceeds donated to the Wau Holland Stiftung foundation to cover Assange’s legal fees and related expenses. This funding not only helped mount an effective legal defense but also built political momentum through social media advertising and advocacy efforts by his family.
The Assange family today also received a Bitcoin donation worth around $500,000 to cover final travel and recovery costs. Support from AssangeDAO enabled Assange to return to Australia and reunite with his family following his plea deal on Wednesday.
