TechFlow news, according to Coindesk, an Indian citizen admitted this week to creating a fake version of the Coinbase website, defrauding over $9.5 million in cryptocurrency from hundreds of victims. According to court documents filed in the Western District of North Carolina, Chirag Tomar and his accomplices created a counterfeit Coinbase Pro website to trick Coinbase customers into surrendering their login credentials. From at least June 2021 until Chirag Tomar's arrest at the end of 2023, at least 542 victims lost their cryptocurrency. Chirag Tomar used the proceeds from the scam to fund a lavish lifestyle, purchasing Rolex and Audemars Piguet watches, "high-end luxury vehicles such as Lamborghinis and Porsches," and traveling to London, Dubai, and Thailand.
Chirag Tomar has not yet been sentenced.
