TechFlow news — 75 U.S. lawmakers now support the CBDC Anti-Surveillance Act.
Representative Tom Emmer, who introduced the bill, posted on X Saturday: "My bill to protect Americans' financial privacy, the CBDC Anti-Surveillance State Act, now has 75 legislative supporters. We will continue building momentum and gaining more support."
Emmer emphasized: "Unlike decentralized cryptocurrencies, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) are digital forms of sovereign currency designed and issued by governments, transacted on government-controlled digital ledgers. In short, CBDCs are programmable money under government control. If not specifically designed to replicate cash, they could enable the U.S. federal government to monitor and restrict Americans’ transactions."
The CBDC Anti-Surveillance State Act was first introduced in January 2022. Representative Tom Emmer reintroduced the bill in early September 2023 with support from 50 members of Congress. On September 20, 2023, he announced that his bill had passed through the House Committee on Financial Services with backing from 60 lawmakers.
