TechFlow reports that Indonesian authorities raided ten locations suspected of stealing electricity to mine Bitcoin over the Christmas weekend. A total of 1,314 Bitcoin mining rigs were seized and 26 people were detained. The power theft caused state losses of 1.44 billion Indonesian rupiah (approximately $100,000), equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 7,500 people in the country.
Although Indonesia has seen growing adoption of cryptocurrencies, stealing electricity remains a criminal offense punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine equal to twice the value of unpaid electricity charges.
