TechFlow reported, citing Cointelegraph, that the National Vulnerability Database (NVD) flagged Bitcoin inscriptions as a cybersecurity risk on December 9, drawing attention to security vulnerabilities in the 2022 Ordinals Protocol development. According to the database entry, certain versions of Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin Knots allow data carrier limits to be bypassed by obfuscating data as code. Inclusion in the NVD means a specific cybersecurity vulnerability has been identified, cataloged, and deemed important for public awareness. The database is managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency under the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The vulnerability is currently under analysis, and as a potential impact, it could lead to large amounts of non-transaction data flooding the blockchain, possibly increasing network size and negatively affecting performance and fees.
