TechFlow news — According to an official blog post, X has started testing "Not A Bot" in New Zealand and the Philippines beginning October 17, 2023. This is a new subscription method for new users in these two countries, requiring phone verification and a $1 annual fee to perform certain actions on the platform’s web version, such as posting content, liking posts, replying, retweeting, quoting other accounts’ posts, and bookmarking posts. New users who do not pay the fee will be unable to perform these actions on the website.
The new test aims to strengthen ongoing efforts to reduce spam, platform manipulation, and bot activity, while balancing platform accessibility with a minimal fee. Existing users are unaffected by this test.
