TechFlow reports that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently published a blog post titled "Protocol and Staking Pool Changes Can Improve Decentralization and Reduce Consensus Overhead," offering insights and recommendations on optimizing Ethereum's consensus mechanism.
Buterin pointed out that the current staking model on Ethereum has a two-tier structure consisting of node operators and delegators. This model increases the risk of centralization among node operators and overloads the consensus layer. To address this, he suggests empowering delegators by allowing them not only to choose which nodes to stake with but also to participate in a lighter-weight consensus process.
Specifically, delegators' ability to select nodes could be expanded through improvements to in-pool voting tools, increased competition between pools, and protocol-level codification of delegation rights. Additionally, lighter forms of consensus participation—such as intermittent block proposing or monitoring transaction inclusion—could significantly reduce the number of signatures required at the consensus layer.
Buterin believes these proposals could be implemented either by enhancing existing staking pool protocols or directly within Ethereum's mainnet protocol. The key is to genuinely empower delegators while reducing the load on the consensus layer.
