TechFlow reported, according to The Block, that the U.S. Department of Justice has recently taken action against several Chinese companies and their employees for manufacturing and distributing drugs such as fentanyl, using cryptocurrencies to conceal identities and funds.
Authorities stated that these Chinese companies and individuals were involved in the production of fentanyl and methamphetamine, as well as the distribution of synthetic opioids, employing various methods to evade law enforcement, including using transshipment agents in the U.S., false labeling, fraudulent invoices, fake postage, and disguised packaging. Additionally, they frequently used cryptocurrencies to obscure identities and financial trails.
Officials seized 1,000 kilograms of precursor chemicals related to fentanyl and traced packages containing these chemicals sent via the U.S. Postal Service. Chinese manufacturers shipped these chemicals globally, where drug cartels and others mixed them before distributing the final narcotics within the United States.
The U.S. Attorney General stated that fentanyl is the leading cause of death among young Americans, and the government will take measures to sever the drug supply chain, remove fentanyl from communities, and hold producers and distributors accountable.
In addition, other authorities have also taken actions targeting the use of cryptocurrency in drug distribution. Furthermore, U.S. lawmakers have proposed legislation aimed at bringing cryptocurrency into compliance by strengthening anti-money laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations to address money laundering and drug trafficking issues.
